Photos of Past Events in Cayucos

C. H. Phillips subdivided a section of the Rancho Moro Y Cayucos Land Grant and Cayucos was born.

Captain James Cass and Captain Ingalls built the pier, a wharf and a warehouse here in 1867

Cayucos is on Highway 1 just a few miles north of Morro Bay an little over 10 miles south of Harmony and Cambria. Cayucos State Beach is in the middle of town, and Moro Strand State Beach is just south of town.

Cayucos is a quaint old town with that "old pair of favorite jeans" feel. This quiet little community on the ocean is a favorite with people from the Central Valley, European tourists and local surfers.

The town is changing from small families to transient vacationers as people buy the houses as an investment and rent them out to vacationers. But the locals that stay love to complain about everything yet want to change nothing. So even though the town has fewer locals that participate in schools and a volunteer fire department, not much ever really changes.

What Cayucos does have is a beach that runs the entire length of town. In summer you'll find festivals downtown on popular weekends, a blow-out 4th of July celebration, and if you're lucky dolphins or pilot whales playing off-shore.

In the winter during storm surf you can spot surfers diving off the end of the pier into the water below.

One of my favorite places to visit is the shop behind the red barn called Cayucos Clay Works & Gardens. The pottery in this shop has wonderful colors and designs plus there's a great collection of succulents. There are antique stores, a candy store, the ever present tourist stores, and a first class restaurant called Hoppe's.

Schooners is popular for drinks, and Skippers for an inexpensive lunch.

There are quality motels and bed and breakfasts all along Ocean Street. Prices vary considerably, so shop around.
